. >>> congress and the white house have about 13 hours to find a solution to the fiscal cliff. political reporter jamie dupree joins us via skype from washington. jamie, is there any progress being made? >> reporter: there were late night and early-morning talks. the leaders spoke by telephone. the things did not work out very well between the speaker and president obama. they didn't work out too well between the senate republican leader and the senate majority leader harry reid either. reid stepped back and now mitch mcconnell, the republican leader, is negotiating director with vice president biden. some of the details referred to leaked out may be the new income threshold with taxes going up about $400,000, $450,000. there could be a number of other things. there's so many different moving parts in this. as of right now, we still don't have a final agreement. the senate is going to be in session in just a few minutes at the top of the hour. we hope to get an update from both leaders at that point in time. >> i've heard the fiscal cliff it's been more described as a fiscal cliff slope. so it's

, there is some good news in that she's expected to recover. >> turning back to the fiscal cliff, just this hour we have reports of republicans claiming the president is holding up talks over the sequester. now we have senator mitch mcconnell and the president saying they want a deal on taxes first before dealing with the sequester. what's going on down there? >> reporter: well, there's this final sticking point of the sequester. they have agreed to this tax deal, which is not insignificant, of course. this tax deal which will increase taxes on individuals making $400,000 or more and couples making $450,000 or more because, remember, some republicans have been resistant to raise taxes at all. the hangup over the sequester is that the white house is saying, democrats are saying let's extend it, stave it off for a year, and pay for it with new tax revenues. republicans say, no, let's deal with it in the nearer future. that's really where the fight is coming together, but these negotiations continue to evolve and my sources tell me they're still optimistic for a deal. >> kristin welker, thank you.

plunge off the fiscal cliff. with no plan and no apparent hope. but here we are, and we have got to do something. if we are determined to go over the cliff, as we seem, we have to do something to stop and the landing. at the bottom of the fiscal cliff are immediate and massive tax increases, deep and indiscriminate spending cuts, and a risk of another recession. if we come down on the final hours -- we have to bang choices -- to do nothing and cause an unbelievable amount of hardship for our fellow americans, or to do something to reduce the suffering inflicted on our citizens by an inflexible political system. mr. president, i choose to do something. today i am introducing the act -- the cliff alleviation at the last minute act. the act would do three important things. it will soften the financial blow the fiscal cliff, it will colmar financial markets, it gives us the certainty of a plan. it allows us, if we ever find the courage, to pursue the fiscal grand bargain that has eluded us so far. the financial markets are watching us and getting warmer -- nervous by the hour. we need to a

reform trying to sell a fiscal cliff deal. he is was on meet the press. republicans weren't happy with that appearance because he they felt he was blaming them. new development in the last hour or two, vice president biden has come back from delaware. he is now here at the white house. he has had two phone calls with mitch mcconnell. in previous budget battles, joe biden has been the closer on these deals. his coming back from delaware might be a sign they are moving a little closer. that will be something to watch. the whole thing about changing cpi and reining in cost of entitlements, republicans are judging in on that. take a listen. >> one of proposals we made was something called change cpi but basically makes an adjustment in terms of how inflation is calculated on social security. highly unpopular among democrats not something supported but to strengthen social security in the long time i'm willing to make those decisions. >> reporter: in the morning, the president seemed to be opening the door to rein in those entitlements and then you heard harry reid shut the door on it.
